Cubist Nude
Cubist Nude is constructed from vintage woodworking tools and reclaimed components, centered around a vertical wooden vise that forms the core of the figure. Two 19th-century French try squares extend from the sides, creating a skeletal structure of right angles and planes. Just below, a pair of circular wooden knobs—likely from old woodworking equipment—are placed to suggest breasts, adding a subtle anthropomorphic touch. At the top, a small wooden box, possibly once used in cheesemaking, frames a photographic image of lips, introducing a human detail into the abstract composition.
The piece draws on the visual language of Cubism, with its fractured geometry and reimagined figure, while also referencing the assemblage traditions of Dada and Constructivism. Tools once used for shaping and measuring now form the figure itself, giving new life and meaning to materials with a history of handwork and precision.
