Square relief made from small black printing plate tiles arranged in a grid, each showing fragments of letters and punctuation
Black Square Treatment #2

This sculpture is made from small square tiles, each cut from a French newspaper printing plate made of a rigid, cardboard-like material. The original plate was divided into roughly half-inch squares and arranged in a grid. Each tile contains fragments of letters and punctuation, and has a tiny hole through which light emits, though it is not always illuminated.

The work draws inspiration from Pierre Soulages and the Art Informel movement, particularly in its emphasis on surface, texture, and the way light interacts with material. What began as a tool for printing and communication has been transformed into a structured, tactile surface. The original function is no longer active, but traces of its history remain. The grid becomes a quiet field of visual rhythm, where form and material take precedence over meaning.
